- What is a “hot patina”?
Patina is a colored effect that is attained by heating the metal sculpture with a torch and then treating it with various chemicals to achieve the desired coloration. This is not a paint, which would only cover the color of the metal. Patina chemicals react with the metal and actually change the it's surface color. See The Bronze Process for more information.
- What is “cold patina”?
When color is applied without heat it is referred to as a cold patina. This is the method I use on aluminum, steel and sometimes copper . My patina is transparent so the characteristics of the particular metal are enhanced, not covered by an opaque surface.
- Can I Place the work out of doors?
Elements can effect patina. All metal is organic and therefore in a constant state of change.
We recognize this when we see copper that is turning blue or green or brass when it tarnishes.
Aluminum can be placed on an east or north side of the house and maintain its appearance for a long time. If it's going to face south or west it should have an overhang .
Steel always stands a chance of oxidizing , which is commonly referred to as rust.
- Can I place a bronze sculpture outdoors?
That is for you to decide. Patinas can and do react to their environment. A good example is copper, which turns green. If this work is placed outdoors, you can expect some variation the patina as the piece ages. Some of our pieces are powder coated, which helps to protect the patina against the elements. See Care of Bronze for cleaning instructions.
- How are edition numbers for the bronze sculptures determined?
The number of duplicates the artist allows to be cast from the original determine the edition number.
- Are the steel home decor items sturdy enough to be used regularly?
Yes, the pieces are made using a high gauge mild steel and will certainly hold up under normal use. See The Steel / Aluminum Process for more information about the steel artwork.
